A First Taste

We've had class for a little over 3 months straight with no official ministry and really very few opportunities to engage in people's lives here. This week however, we had our first taste of one ministry in the area. We have spent every day at a local school sitting in classes, eating lunch with the kids and talking with the teachers. For some of us, this is very stretching, either the kids aspect or the school aspect or a combination of both. But since I've loved kids for as long as I can remember and I never minded school (even might have admitted enjoying it if I was brave enough), I feel right at home.

I've seen so many places for me to fit in and get involved in the work going on at this school and I'm excited about how God wants to move there. The school, as I believe I have mentioned before, is not a Christian school but all except for one of the teachers are believers. The majority of the students are Muslim as is the rest of the town, and the ones that are believers are not from among the local people groups who are unreached but from other parts of Kenya that have been evangelized. Basically, this is a perfect place for kids to be exposed to the gospel who otherwise would probably never hear it and to then share it with their own unreached families and communities. Also, the teachers themselves may or may not be truly committed to Christ, and therein lies another opportunity to build relationships and draw people towards Christ.

I hope to have stories to share and a more defined vision for my time here after this week of ministry, but until then please pray for the following:

-Scripture Memorization...Ashley and Melissa are heading up a new club for the students to participate in during which they will memorize scripture and learn about the Word of God. God has shown tremendous favor in getting this going and we are eagerly awaiting the first meeting, hopefully next week. Pray for courage for the kids to join in, soft hearts for the Word to sink into, and wisdom for Ashley, Melissa and whoever else helps them.

-Relationships...The friendships we are slowly building seem so fragile and surface level at this point, but I can see hope for deep discipleship and true friendship someday. Pray for discernment and wisdom to know who to talk to, when to approach them, what to say...and all of the other little nuances of building relationships. Things can get messy between cultures, so please also pray for grace over our blunders and protection from any serious mistakes!

I specifically feel led to pursue a few of the girls I have been talking to for a few weeks now at Sunday school, one of whom recently lost her father and is struggling to adjust to switching schools (I am fairly confident she is a believer but still very shook up) and the other who was close with the previous team and seeking the truth actively despite persecution. Please pray for these girls and that God would direct our conversations and friendships.

Thanks for reading and praying!

  1. I am really glad that you enjoyed your week and have an inspiration to go deeper with some of the students! I love that God cares for each of them individually so even if there is just one girl that you get to pour out love and truth too in these next months that one girl is so worth it in the Lord's eyes. Be ready for many obstacles to stand in your way but know God gives us wisdom to get over the obstacles or even smash right thru them! I am praying for you Laura and I am so proud of you!
