The sermon I heard today was sooo refreshing and great...it was all about Jesus!
It's funny how we tend to neglect talking about Jesus himself, even this is all about him. Ok, maybe it's not funny, I guess it's more scary and sad.
But anyway, the pastor is going through Hebrews with the question Who is Jesus? which is an awesome question to ask! In the first chapter it talks about the majesty of Jesus and how he is exalted even above the angels, then in the second chapter it talks about how he became just like us in human form in every way. The two ends form the paradox of Christianity...that Jesus is truly God and truly man simultaneously, and still is today. If we lessen the weight of either side, the beautiful tension fails and the identity of Jesus is distorted.
It is vitally important that he is God, powerful, all knowing and wise, otherwise he would not have to authority or ability to rescue and redeem me. Just as crucial is his humanity, otherwise I would have no proof of his love for me or assurance of his compassion in my weakness as a human. In Jesus I see Psalm 62:11-12 in action..."One thing God has spoken, two things have I heard: that you, O God, are strong, and that you, O Lord, are loving..." He is both strong and loving!
This is the answer our hearts cry out for in doubt. We ask Is God able to do something? when we see injustice and oppression, or even the simple frustrations of daily life. And we ask Does God want to do something? when we see pain and destruction around the world that never seems to end.
Can we trust God? Yes. God is both able and willing to fulfill his promises and intervene on our behalf, and we have Jesus as proof of both his power and his love.
That was a reminder I needed to hear today; the simplicity of following Christ is incredible. Hope it's encouraging to you too!
Awesome Laura. God is strong and God is loving. Thanks for the reminder.
