Sorry Sorry Sorry!

I know, I know...it's been almost a month since I wrote a blog entry. I have no excuses worthy of writing down, so I'll apologize and move on! haha

When Esther and I returned from Lamu, we had two weeks before our team retreat in Malindi, also on the coast. It felt really strange to rush through two weeks of ministry and class and take another vacation! But I am still very grateful for the reprieve and refreshment we received on retreat.

Ken Krause, the former director of BCOM and one of my most favorite teachers and leaders from Bethany, came to check up on us and guide us through some reflecting over the last 9 months of internship. We spent some time talking about our relationships with God and each other and identified some things that are keeping us from being totally unified. It was good to sit down as a team an evaluate our relationships and recognize the lack of trust and love we have as well as how we have grown and become more unified since we left the states. Man, I don't think I'll ever finish learning to be humble and love my neighbor.

We also ate lots of ice cream and went swimming in a pool every day! :)
It was awesome. So now we're back in Grssa...oh wait, the getting back was the craziest part of the trip! We went to catch a bus back at 7AM, but no bus ever showed up. After some phone calls between Jason and the bus people, we figured out that NONE of the buses running that route were coming! The police started cracking down on regulations, stopped all of the buses the day before, and were taking the owners to court.

So we all piled back into Jason's truck and started into town to find a cheaper place to spend the night. And of course, Jason's truck broke down on the way! So all 13 of us got out and the dudes pushed the truck to a mechanic. Praise the Lord, the mechanic knew what he was doing and didn't overcharge Jason, so we were back on the road soon after. We said goodbye to Ken, stayed the night in a guesthouse and caught the bus the next morning (they paid fines in court and were back on the road breaking the rules the next morning...oy).

Ok, so NOW after those adventures, we are back in Grssa. :) I've continued teaching computer class this week. Scheduling is still a challenge as the teachers are always busy with something so even though they're super excited about computer class in theory, it's hard to get them all in the classroom on time if at all.

It's eye opening to realize how much I learned simply by growing up in my generation in America. All of the terminology, the basic understanding of WHAT a computer is, how to use a mouse or a keyboard...all of it I learned by exposure not sitting in a class. I think I only took one semester of computer class in my life...and that was in like 7th grade!

Sometimes when I'm teaching it feels like I'm teaching people from my grandparents' generation...or maybe even my parents'. No offense at all meant in that! But I'm sure we've all experienced someone of a slightly older age trying to make the computer cooperate and getting totally lost when it does something unexpected. The teachers are at about that level of computer literacy. A few times I've had to seriously stifle a laugh...like how one of the teachers types by brushing his hands back and forth over the keys till he finds the key he's looking for then goes in for the dive with one finger and whacks the key so hard it enters the letter like six times! hahahaha! It's taken a while to teach that one away. At least they're all good sports and mostly just laugh a lot at themselves and each other for all the mistakes they make.

So I'm having fun teaching and it's hard to leave every few weeks with all these random trips I have to keep making. Thursday Jessica, Heath and I will be leaving for Nairobi to catch a plane to South Africa the next day. Then after a week we'll return on tourist visas again. Woo hoo.
Pray for safety and health and all that please!

  1. Whoa! You're going to South Africa!? No way! That's where it all began...

Anyways, good hearing from you. We should skype sometime when you're not talking to your mom. :)
